Do you think your electricity bill is too high? Here are 10 tips for saving electricity and money. Remember, the most eco-friendly energy is the energy you don't use!
- Don't leave lights on day and night.
Turn the lights off in rooms you are not using, remember to switch off most lights when going to bed or leaving the home. Timers can be a good idea.
- Run full machines.
Fill up the laundry machine and dishwasher, don't wash small loads of clothes or dishes.
- Turn off electrical equipment.
If you are not home, you don't need the TV, stereo and other appliances to be in standby mode.
- Purchase climate-friendly products.
Look for electrical products rated A when you have to replace the dishwasher or other white goods.
- Avoid wasting water.
A water-saving shower is a good idea, so are energy efficient faucets. Don't waste hot water. You can install a simple flow restrictor on the shower hose if you manage to fill a 10 litre bucket in less than a minute.
- Stop draughts.
If there is a cold draught from the window sills, it can be a great help to add newer insulation or seal air leaks. Add supplementary insulation to a cold attic. A more advanced alternative involves using thermography and air leakage control to uncover heat leakage from the home.
- Be critical of everything that is replaced.
Choose energy efficient windows and doors when they need to be replaced. Ask for a low u-value. Don't forget basement windows and balcony doors.
- Use energy saving light bulbs.
Energy saving light bulbs are widely available, and a better alternative than traditional light bulbs. They have a longer lifetime and therefore need changing less often, making your life a little easier.
- Take control of the temperature.
You don't need the living room to be more than 22 degrees to be comfortable. Heaters controlled by thermostats are a good investment, and with a timer you can reduce the temperature when you don't need it to be so high e.g. when you're not home or during the night.
- Choose alternative energy sources.
If you have the opportunity to choose an alternative to electricity, there are a number of options available:
- Heat pump.
- Pellet stove.
- Clean burning wood stove.
- Connecting to district heating.
- Solar collector with domestic water heating.

If you don't read the electricity meter, a bill will still be created. It is stipulated based on the annual consumption at the meter.
